Rapid Vienna v Fiorentina preview

Fiorentina's second Conference League match of the season is away to Rapid Vienna on Thursday October 23 (18:45). 

Rapid are Austria's most successful team, with 32 league titles to their name – the most recent coming in 2007/08. They have won the Austrian Cup 14 times (the last in 1994/95).

The Austrian outfit play their home games at the 28,600-seater Allianz Stadion, which was inaugurated in 2016.

Fiorentina and Rapid have met on five previous occasions, with four Viola wins and one defeat.

The first time was in the European Cup Winners' Cup last 16 in 1961/62. The Viola won 3-1 in Florence then 6-2 away.

The two sides met again three seasons later in the semi-final of the Mitropa Cup: a 3-0 victory for Fiorentina.

The most recent match-up came just two years ago, in the 2023/24 Conference League play-offs. Marco Grull's goal in Vienna gave Rapid a 1-0 first-leg advantage, before the Viola turned the tie around with a 2-0 triumph on home soil.

Three Austrian players have donned the Viola shirt down the years. 

The first was Engelbert Koenig,who spent one season in Florence during the war years (1940/41), making two appearances and scoring one goal.

The second was goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who joined in 2001 and played 30 games in his sole season at the club.

The third was Sascha Pichler, who joined the Viola youth academy in 2004 but never made a first-team appearance.
