The player who is set to strike the most fear into the hearts of Fiorentina’s players in their Conference League match against Rakow Czestochowa is Jonatan Brunes.
Brunes, cousin of Manchester City dangerman Erling Haaland, shares several characteristics with the Premier League striker: he's tall, quick, explosive and left-footed. However, compared to his famous relative, Rakow's number 18 boasts greater versatility. He is capable of dropping back a few yards to link up the play and support the attack, while still keeping his killer instinct in front of goal.
In a team that relies on defensive solidity – Rakow only conceded twice in the Conference League group stages - having a lethal attacking threat is crucial. Brunes's stats this season speak for themselves, because with 20 goals and one assist in 35 appearances across all competitions he's already surpassed last season's tally. His impact on the Polish league has been devastating, so much so that he currently sits third in the Ekstraklasa scoring charts, cementing his position as one of the country's most feared prospects.
Brunes has also proven to be a key player in Rakow’s European campaign so far. After leading his team through qualifying by scoring in both the first and second legs against Zilina, he recovered from an uncertain start in the group stages to net against Rapid Vienna and Zrinjski Mostar, securing his team's progress to the round of 16. The Norwegian is also enjoying excellent form right now - in March he's already scored three goals in as many matches.
Brunes's style of play is very direct. He prefers to stay in the centre of the pitch, and almost all of his goals this season have come from inside the penalty area. In addition to excellent aerial coordination, Brunes boasts good timing when running, which helps him make up for his lack of pace.
Ultimately, and without making further impossible comparisons with his famous cousin, Brunes is the greatest threat to the Viola’s defence. While he's not a star player who wins matches on his own he’s a solid and confident attacking force. Fiorentina will have to be careful to limit the number of dangerous passes he receives and avoid being overwhelmed by his physicality, because in a match that already promises to be tough, a striker who consistently prowls the penalty area like Brunes can turn even the smallest slip-up into a serious problem.
