An inspired Fiorentina thrash Verona

20 March 2022

Fiorentina overcame Hellas Verona 6-0 in what was a one-sided match at Bozzi. Patrizia Panico’s side bounced back in style, climbing out of the relegation zone and getting their first home win of 2022.

The home side set themselves out in a 3-4-1-2 with two changes from last time out. Katja Schroffenegger was recalled to goal and Darya Kravets came in to join Stephanie Breitner and Alice Tortelli in the back three. Both sides took to the pitch supporting the #PlayForPeace initiative put in place by the FIGC which is promoting peace in light of the conflict in Ukraine.

The game got off to a cagey start with little of note in the first 15 minutes. The first chance fell to the visitors but Veronica Pasini’s effort went wide after she was put clean through on goal with only Schroffenegger to beat. However La Viola weren’t flustered and soon after hit the post through Valentina Giacinti. Unfortunately it was to be one of her final contributions of the afternoon as she was forced off through injury to be replaced by Karin Lundin.

Fiorentina’s pressure told and they went into the lead on the half hour mark. Breitner picked up the ball on the right flank before playing in a ball for Daniela Sabatino to finish and make it 1-0. The first half petered out with little of note in the final 15 minutes and the hosts satisfied with their lead.

La Viola came out for the second half all guns blazing and soon doubled their advantage through Veronica Boquete in what was the Spaniard’s second goal for the club. The visitors were shellshocked and Fiorentina made the most of Hellas’ uncertainty by getting a third through Lundin only two minutes later. From then on in there was no way back and Marta Mascarello fired in a long-distance rocket before fellow substitute Michela Catena made it 5-0. Lundin got her second of the afternoon with just ten minutes to play before Catena almost claimed her brace for the afternoon, seeing her effort come off the crossbar.

Fiorentina come away all smiles after a 6-0 win and are more than ready for their big clash against Milan next Sunday at 12:30.
