They needed a win and that’s what they got. Despite being down to ten for a third of the game, Fiorentina Women came away victorious over Inter with a 3-1 win, bringing them level with Roma on points. The future of the Viola’s campaign now lies in Rome. If the Giallorosse lose on Sunday, then the two teams will battle it out for a Champions League spot at Viola Park next Saturday.
Turning our attention back to the game at the Arena Civica di Milano, Irene Santi quickly put the Nerazzurre ahead, firing home from outside the box. Half an hour later, the Viola found an equalizer through Vero Boquete after Madelen Janogy frustratingly hit the woodwork twice. Just before half time, Fiorentina took the lead with a close range shot by Emma Snerle, marking her first goal for the club.
Fiorentina came into the second half hungry for the win and it wasn’t long before Boquete made it three with a strong strike from the edge of the box. With a two-goal lead, the game should have been put to bed, but after being booked twice in short succession, Agnese Bonfantini was sent off in the 70th minute. With Fiorentina down to ten, Inter tried to use this to their advantage. A big effort was needed by the Viola defense to hold off the hosts, but luck was also on their side when Beatrice Merlo’s attempt to make it 3-2 hit the crossbar.
After five long minutes of stoppage time, the ref blew to signal the end of the game. Fiorentina came away with a 3-1 win and will be eagerly awaiting the result from Roma’s clash with Milan tomorrow at 12:30 CEST.
If the Giallorosse win, the Viola’s campaign will be virtually over as their final match will have no impact on their place in the table. If Roma and Fiorentina end the season on equal points, Roma will take the Champions League spot thanks to their head-to-head record. If Roma draw or lose on Sunday, next Saturday’s match at Viola Park will see the two teams battle it out to clinch that coveted place in Europe. The game is set to kick off at 15:00 CEST.
