Fiorentina Women end season with 2-1 win over Lazio

Fiorentina Women bid farewell to the fans at the Stadio Curva Fiesole with a victory over Lazio on the final matchday, clinching fourth place in the process. Pablo Pinones Arce’s team got the better of their direct rivals in the standings in a contest that the Viola controlled throughout. The squad showed great maturity in managing possession across the entire game, proving clinical in exploiting every inch of space conceded by the visitors while giving away almost nothing in defense.

The match began at a slow tempo, with a lengthy feeling-out phase between the two sides as neither could find an opening. Despite Fiorentina playing on the front foot, the Lazio wall was initially difficult to break down. At the other end, Lazio’s rare offensive forays were snuffed out early by an alert Maria Luisa Filangeri.

The deadlock was broken in the 31st minute when Fiorentina carved out their first real chance. During the build-up, Alice Lombardi found space to overlap Cecilie Eiriksdottir, who played the number 16 through. Lombardi then squared the ball to Katla Tryggvadottir, who made no mistake one-on-one with Francesca Durante.

While the first half ended without further drama, the second half began at high intensity, with Fiorentina determined to finish the job. In the first ten minutes of the second half, the hosts created two clear-cut scoring opportunities. The first came in the 50th minute when Emma Faerge curled a cross for Berglind Omarsdottir. The striker got a slight touch on the ball, creating a dangerous trajectory that Durante managed to save with lightning reflexes. Five minutes later, Sofie Bredgaard took matters into her own hands. Receiving the ball on the wing, the winger embarked on a solo run toward the goal, dribbling past two opponents. Her shot, destined for the top corner, was kept out by a brilliant block by Antonietta Castiello.

Following a period of controlled possession by the home side, the second goal arrived in the 74th minute to put the game to bed. Tryggvadottir found Bredgaard on the edge of the penalty area, and the winger showed why that is her trademark spot. She cut inside and unleashed a curling effort that nestled into the far post in spectacular fashion.

Lazio pulled one back in the 88th minute through Nikola Karczewska’s stunner from the edge of the area, rifling the ball into the top corner. Viola Bartalini, who was making her first appearance of the season, had no chance.

In the final minutes, Fiorentina focused on managing possession and defending their lead until the final whistle. The team closed out the season in the best possible way, earning a well-deserved victory in a match that they dominated from start to finish.
