Viola Legacy: Udinese v Fiorentina

The new episode of Viola Legacy is about the memorable match between Udinese and Fiorentina in September 2023.

Udinese were a solid team that season, with a squad that included top players such as Lazar Samardzic and Lorenzo Lucca. The visitors still did not know that that season would bring many victories, followed, unfortunately, by two lost finals, in the Coppa Italia and the Conference League.

Udinese got off to a strong start and created two major chances in the first three minutes, first with Florian Thauvin inside the box, whose finish was denied by Pietro Terracciano, and then Samardzic who took a powerful shot from the edge of the box, which was also denied by Fiorentina’s keeper.

There were two more big chances for the hosts between the 18th and 21st minute, first with Martin Payero’s shot going high after receiving an excellent assist from Lucca, and then Fiorentina’s keeper miraculously saving a shot from the Frenchman.

In the 31st minute, Giacomo Bonaventura delivered an extremely precise pass from his half of the pitch, finding Lucas Martinez Quarta who broke through to make it 1-0.

In the second half, Festy Ebosele served Lucca who was completely unmarked with an open goal, but still sent the potential equalizer into the side netting. Sandi Lovric and Ebosele created many problems for the Fiorentina defense and Terracciano had to step up and stop them from scoring.

As the game was drawing to a close, Alfred Duncan shielded the ball well and whipped a cross into the middle; a few deflections delivered the ball to Bonventura’s feet, who took a right-footed shot and made it 2-0.

It was a difficult yet crucial win, in an environment that is always very tricky, and it helped boost the team’s morale ahead of a very important season for them.
