Vanoli analyzes Pisa victory

Paolo Vanoli took questions from journalists after Fiorentina's win over Pisa on Monday evening. Here's a selection of his comments:

“This was a very important win today, firstly because it was a derby and – as I said to my players – we owed it to our fans because we haven't given them much to cheer about this season and we're still down in the quagmire. The fans have expressed their discontent but they've always got behind us till the end and they did that again today. It doesn't matter how you play but you have to win the derby.

“In the second half Pisa held a higher line and played with two strikers. I think at that point we were a bit lazy with our ball circulation because we the opportunities to do the same things as in the first half. That's something we need to learn: when the opposition let us have the ball, we can dominate the play; when they press us more, we need to read the different moments of the game. That said, I think we're learning to dig in and defend tidily – or scrappily, when needed.

“The first thing I said when I came in is the hardest thing for these players is to understand that the target has changed – it's no longer the big objective they had at the start of the season but something much, much lower. This team was put together with the aim of playing good football, and when you're fighting at the bottom you're not always able to do that. You have to be able to scrap and we've thrown away a lot of points because we weren't able to play scrappy. Recently I've seen that more and it was clear today, including from our substitutes.

“Sometimes we drop off too much and when that happens we need to keep the ball more. When you're tired you can defend by keeping possession.”
