Vanoli reacts to Napoli defeat

This is what Paolo Vanoli had to say at his press conference after Fiorentina were beaten 2-1 by Napoli at the Stadio Maradona:

“We found it difficult at the start of the first half but we did well and we were unlucky with the only chance we had – first that header against the post and then the chance from the second ball. Opportunities like that are important to get back into the game.

“I thought we were excellent in the second half and that's what we need to build on because we created several chances and should have scored an equalizer.

“We've got some players back now and we must go again because we have some real battles coming up.

“[Moise] Kean looked good when he came on. He had two decent chances and perhaps could have done better with his first touch on the second one. We had a recovery program for him because we're going to need him to be consistent and important from now on, though I must say [Roberto] Piccoli has come on loads in recent weeks and he played really well today.

“We need to cut out some of the individual mistakes. [Miguel] Gutierrez's goal, for example – we all know he prefers the left foot. We should have read that better. We need to understand our difficulties and start picking up points against the big teams.

“We were up against very strong, physical opponents, who haven't conceded any goals from set-pieces. [Nicolo] Fagioli often finds himself man-marked but that doesn't mean you stop playing. You have to move more, play one-twos and be patient. In the second half we played better and made better use of the space.

“New signings always take a while to settle in. [Manor] Soloman is showing his quality and I'm happy he scored.”
