Read coach Paolo Vanoli’s comments following Fiorentina’s 2-1 win over Bologna.
You certainly dominated the first half. You suffered a bit in the final 10 minutes.
“We had two difficult days. Our President gave so much to the club. Today we wanted to bring his values to the pitch: unity, family, fighting together. These are the values I’ve always felt when talking to him. Our thoughts are with Rocco Commisso’s wife Catherine and his children, as they are going through a difficult period.
“As far as the game is concerned, I believe that we played a great first half. We made few mistakes. If I had to find one thing that didn’t work, in the early stages we pressed high but weren’t as intense as we should’ve been and that’s something we need to improve. Afterwards, we moved the ball more and won it back on various occasions, and our overall quality improved. [Fabiano] Parisi had two good chances.
“We could’ve handled the second half differently, but I think that considering what we went through these past couple of days, we were anxious to secure those three points. Hopefully this win will help us remain sharp and confident.”
Do you believe the team is at a turning point for Fiorentina?
“This team has been playing well for some time now. Unfortunately, the results affect our performances. I looked at Como’s stats against Milan, which was a good game, and compared them with ours against Milan, and we played a better game. We also played well against Cremonese, taking 23 shots and only won in the 93rd minute. These results had a bit of an impact on us, but it’s normal. A coach must also believe in what he has the team do.
“If we want to overcome this, we must play football. Just defending will not be enough. In fact, as soon as we started sitting deep, we conceded. That bothered me. Because the substitutes too should bring energy onto the pitch. We mustn’t be afraid of attacking. That’s something we need to work on and improve. I told the players that this is how they should play and that we’re on the right path. But in any case, we’ll fight until the end. We’re going to stay humble and keep pushing. We did well, but so did Cagliari against Juventus. The second half of the season is a whole new chapter and we need to stay sharp.”
