Goalless stalemate away to Torino

Torino and Fiorentina extend their historic rivalry, now totaling 152 league encounters, with the Viola having recorded 50 wins, 52 draws and 50 losses.

The most common Serie A scoreline between these sides remains 1-1, taking place in 23 matches. The latest was on January 19, 2025, when Moise Kean and Albert Gudmundsson netted for Fiorentina. Heading into this match, the Viola came off a 1-1 draw at Cagliari, while Torino were keen to rebound after a heavy 5-0 opening-day defeat to Inter in Milan.

Fiorentina coach Stefano Pioli reverted to a front pairing of Roberto Piccoli and Moise Kean, flanked by Gudmundsson and Rolando Mandragora behind them. Simon Sohm earned the starting nod over Nicolo Fagioli. Meanwhile, Torino named two former Viola, Giovanni Simeone and Cristiano Biraghi, in their starting XI, along with the newly acquired Kristjan Asllani, on loan from Inter.

Torino carved out the first chance when Cesare Casadei, sliding in brilliantly from Simeone’s assist, tried to beat David de Gea, but the veteran keeper stood firm. Fiorentina looked sharp in possession but lacked the killer pass.

On 17 minutes, Dodo unleashed an ambitious volley from 30 yards, seeing it deflect just wide. Moments later, Kean attempted an acrobatic effort from the Brazilian’s cross, but it sailed high.

Around the 34th minute, a swift break saw Sohm float a perfect pass to Piccoli, whose right-footed drive was smartly blocked by Torino’s keeper Franco Israel, forcing a corner. Pietro Comuzzo then unleashed a powerful strike that whizzed just past the post.

Deep in first-half added time, Simeone threatened from inside the box, but De Gea produced another stunning save. The half ended 0-0, with Fiorentina growing into the encounter but still lacking the final touch.

Pioli introduced Fagioli and debutant Eddy Kouadio for the 19-year-old’s first Serie A appearance, replacing the cautioned Sohm and Comuzzo. Fiorentina pushed immediately: Ranieri’s low cross found Dodo, but nobody could tap home.

On the hour-mark, a corner from Gudmundsson fell to Ranieri, whose effort was blocked. Torino responded with substitutions, including Simeone on for Che Adams, and Gvidas Gineitis replacing Ivan Ilic midway through the half. Fiorentina rotated too, bringing on Jacopo Fazzini for Gudmundsson and Edin Dzeko for Piccoli.

Despite both sides probing, neither could break through. The match ended in a goalless draw in Fiorentina’s second consecutive stalemate.

After the international break, Fiorentina welcomes Napoli to the Stadio Franchi on Saturday, September 13. The Viola will be aiming to turn their build-up into points and sharpen their attack heading into that crucial showdown.
