Viery Fernandes Santos Lopes - or simply Viery – was born in Uba, in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, on January 2, 2005.
He went on to join Gremio when he was 10 years old. Initially deployed as a left back, he was moved over to central defence at age 16, a move facilitated by his physique. After progressing through the youth ranks he made his first team debut on January 27, 2025. However, 2026 was his true breakthrough under the guidance of coach Luis Castro, who established him as a regular starter for the Porto Alegre club. Last season he made 27 appearances for Gremio, scoring two goals.
In terms of playing style, Viery is the prototype of the modern centre back. He combines his imposing physique – he’s over 6ft tall – with fantastic technical ability. Defensively, the Brazilian uses his size to great effect in aerial duels and has excellent positional sense. He combines his effectiveness in space management with impeccable timing in challenges.
When building play from the back, the 21-year-old defender exudes great skill and confidence. He’s adept at absorbing opposition pressure and distributing the ball accurately over short, medium and long distances.
