Fiorentina coach Paolo Vanoli gave a press conference following his team’s win over Juventus in Serie A.
This was perhaps your best game of the season.
“This win is dedicated to a team that wanted to give something special to its fans, as our fans really suffered a lot this season. We’ve proven that we are men. Despite all the criticism, we’ve shown that we are ambitious, that we want to grow. Coming here and winning against a highly motivated team that wants to qualify for the Champions League was clear evidence that we have strong values.
“I’ve always showed courage. As a coach, I have goals and the number one goal for this club was avoiding relegation. And I had to do it somehow. That’s what you didn’t understand and I’m sorry about that. This isn’t criticism. These players can do great things with a clear mind, but to build something, you need sound foundations. If you start from the top, you’re bound to fail. We started from the foundations, and it worked. The players won for their fans today. The only shame today was [Fabiano] Parisi’s injury. He’s had a fantastic season. Hopefully the tests in the upcoming days won’t show a serious injury.”
Fiorentina have once again put up a great performance against a major team. Did they apply what they’ve learned from you?
“I’ve said in the past that many players made big sacrifices for the team, such as [Albert] Gud[mundsson], who we were never able to make the most of in his position, as was the case with [Jacopo] Fazzini. But they helped the rest of the team, which I really appreciated. It’s something they’ve done since we changed our formation. Rolando [Mandragora] too did a great job and deserved to score a goal. It’s nice for a coach to come and be able to choose the line-up. We’ve played many good games. We’ve done well against major teams, but I’d like the team to do well against the other teams as well. However, we had trouble with our forwards this year, as Moise [Kean] was out. At any rate, I want to reiterate that our fans really deserved this win.”
