Paolo Vanoli took questions from the media at a press conference following Monday's 1-0 win over Lazio. Here's what he had to say:
On the significance of the win and UECL
“This was a big step towards securing our top-flight survival but it's not mathematically certain yet. The players deserve credit because they played like a team tonight and showed character and maturity.
"Now we need to recover well for our game on Thursday. It's going to be very difficult but we have to give it a go. The guys were really upset after the first leg, especially after the third goal, but the players and staff all worked well to get ready for this game, which was important.
"[Daniele] Rugani showed his experience. I didn't want to risk [Marin] Pongracic today after he came off with a sore hamstring the other day. [Luis] Balbo did well when he came on.”
On the team's progress
“We need to keep growing. You don't build a winning mentality in a few months. It takes time. Our results have been quite good – sometimes we've done well, sometimes we haven't. There's been criticism, some of which I've accepted and some I haven't.
“When I joined we were four points adrift. Two draws later we were six points away. When you hear people saying that no Serie A team in our predicament has ever beaten the drop that can have a huge psychological impact. We've come a long way but there's still a bit to go and we must remain alert. We dug in well today but sometimes I'd like us to have more of the ball."
On promoting youth
“We had seven youth players with us today and the captain of the Under 18s [Salvatore Cianciulli], which is reward not just for the boy himself but for the team's achievement [winning the Viareggio Tournament]. The whole team and their coach deserve congratulations for that. I've always worked with youngsters and I know how much it means to them to join the first team."
On players returning from injury
“[Manor] Solomon is fit again. We just needed to ease him back in. [Rolando] Mandragora has recovered fully and [Giovanni] Fabbian has improved. We hope to have [Marco] Brescianini back for Lecce.”
On Jack Harrison
“Harrison is a player I really like because he brings intensity, having come from the Premier League and had [Marcelo] Bielsa as coach. It's not easy coming into a league where you don't speak the language. He worked very hard tonight but he needs to improve the quality of his play – there were a few situations that he could have handled better. Let's not forget we had an intense game on Thursday but we showed we have energy this evening and Jack played his part.”
