Vanoli discusses draw with Parma

Read coach Paolo Vanoli’s post-match comments after Fiorentina’s goalless draw with Parma.

It wasn’t a very good performance; the team was a bit slow.

“We were a bit slow on the attack in the final third in the first half of the match. We weren’t very brave on one-on-ones and when more assertiveness was needed. We misplaced many crosses. In the second half we played a bit better. We created a bit more. We could’ve won. We’re disappointed because we really wanted to take all three points, but that one point we earned today has enabled us to stay ahead of Cremonese and stay focused on our upcoming games, including the Conference League match.”

What do you think your mistakes have been?

“When I first joined the club, we had many chances to score. Then there were many highs and lows. Today we lacked quality, for example in our crosses. We were up against a very physical team and we should’ve relied more on our combination play and the far post. It’s true that we had no shots on target against Udinese, but today our xG was over 1 and we conceded very little. However, we could’ve done more in the final third. We lacked quality, as well as individual initiatives and creativity.”

25,000 fans booed the performance. How do you respond to that?

“I’ve always said that fans are a crucial part of the club. On the one hand, we should look at the bright side of this: since I arrived, our fans have always cheered us on, even when things were particularly bad for us. If they decided to boo us, we need to accept that. But we must all realize that we will keep fighting until the end. We must because we’ve been bottom of the table since the very beginning of the season.”

Fiorentina are performing worse than a week ago.

“I think that right now we’re lacking some psychological and physical stamina. We need to recover it to do well. Our game against Udinese was our fifth in 16 days and they were able to bounce back mentally. Today we performed better in the second half: we were more aggressive and pressed high. We also did better in the final third and had some chances where we had to capitalize. We need to be sharp again. We have five other matches coming up with two days less at our disposal and we need to help one another.”
