Coach Paolo Vanoli’s comments following Genoa 2-2 Fiorentina

Did you like your team’s attitude?

“I arrived two days ago and told the players that they have a new chapter to write. We must forget what has happened so far and start something important, while remembering where we are right now. I saw their matches and they played like a team that had to qualify for the Champions League, but they are at the bottom of the table instead.

“Today we played as a team who stayed focused throughout the whole match and fought hard. It’s what our fans wanted. I told the team that we need to be patient to get out of this situation. If we maintain this attitude, we can truly harness the qualities of the team. I told them that we were playing against a team who were used to fighting hard to survive.

“I also told them that they are all important. They mustn’t be selfish. They must prioritize the team. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Should the team be more careful in the defensive phase?

“Yes, it’s the first thing I said to them. They weren’t defending well. We did a good job with our marking in the box today. But we were careless with the second balls. We opted for man-marking on corner kicks rather than zonal marking because the data showed that the latter tactic didn’t work.

“Unfortunately I haven’t had time to work on the back line because they played the Conference League match on Thursday and had little time to train

“I didn’t like what happened after [David] De Gea rushed out. We have the bad habit of complaining too much and stopping the game. I don’t like that. We shouldn’t stop the game. We should keep playing. But we have to do one thing at a time; two at once is too much right now.”

How did you find the team in terms of intensity? Do you plan on changing the team’s formation too?

“I think we need to start from the basics. Then, when the situation gets better, we can try new things. We’re lucky because we have two weeks to recover, and then we’ll have a very busy month.

“But what I want to stress is that these players need to all feel important. We can’t just have the same 11 players on the pitch with so many different competitions.

“Today we earned one point away from home. Here’s what I have to say about that: good. It’s a first step.”
