Coach Paolo Vanoli held a press conference following Fiorentina’s match against Juventus. Here is what he had to say.
The team gave everything out there, but you were unable to take all three points tonight.
“I was a bit hard on the players because I told them that they need to learn to win. We were up against a good team, but we showed a great attitude tonight. We did what our fans expected of us. They were determined to win. I want to see a team with this attitude. The players showed a lot of courage. Players need time to grow. I’m perfectly fine with playing with more forwards if they’re willing to make more sacrifices for the team, as they did tonight.
“They should be disappointed, and they need to learn this feeling. This team is made up of young players, but it has a lot of potential, so they need to learn to have a winning mentality. Because once the break is over, matches will get harder, we’ll have some decisive games and we’ll have to be ready.”
What’s your take on the mistake David De Gea made that allowed Juventus to seal the draw?
“He’s my captain and always will be, so we don’t have any problems.”
Fiorentina have grown a lot, but you concede too many goals.
“That’s absolutely true. We’re working on it and we also need to do a lot of individual work. Hard work is the only way to improve. This team needs to be proactive rather than reactive. We mustn’t dwell on the fact that we’ve conceded many goals. Instead we need to work on that with the quality we have. We need to focus on ball possession and the players need to be sharper during the game. Right now we’re a bit too naïve. But all of this is part of the process.
“I believe this team has a lot of potential. Despite the goals we conceded, I believe we’ve already improved tonight: we scored goals, we took the lead, we’ve played against major teams like Juventus and Atalanta and Inter and we always came close to winning, but failing to seize the moment in the end. But that means that the team is working hard to reach those goals. Tonight I’m not upset because we conceded two goals. I’m upset because we need to win. The players also need to feel the same way because we need to make that leap in quality.”
