Mareggini: “Thank you so much. I always feel the fans’ amazing support”

Former Fiorentina goalkeeper Gianmatteo Mareggini was interviewed after the match between Fiorentina All Stars and Operazione Nostalgia Legends.

How does it feel to be here tonight?

“There’s nothing more I could want. I’ve recently had a daughter; she’s three years old now. I’m living a second life, and part of it is made up of events such as this one and the one on Sunday.”

What do you think of when you look at that goal?

“That penalty against Juventus. I stood in front of the fans and that’s the goal where it happened. I can still feel all that support and passion. It’s been a long time, but there’s something that just doesn’t go away. Here in Florence, fathers pass on their passion to their children. So, I sometimes meet kids who walk up to me and say, ‘You saved that penalty against Juventus.’ And it’s a source of pride.”

In an interview after that match, you said, “We looked at each other, and in the end I won.”

“Back then, you didn’t have all the technology you have today. You’d have your notebook, you’d watch tapes of other players and write down what they did. So in that match, it was a challenge. We looked at one another in the eye, and he was the first to look away to put the ball down, while I kept looking at him, and I felt I had the upper hand.”
