Interesting facts about Lausanne v Fiorentina

Fiorentina’s final opponent in the Conference League Group Stage will be Lausanne. The club was founded in the fall of 1896. Since 2020 Lausanne have been playing their home matches at the Stade de la Tuiliere, which has a capacity of about 12,500 spectators.

The club has won a total of seven national titles (the latest dates back to the 1964/65 season) and nine Swisscom Cups (the latest one in the 1998/99 season). After finishing tenth in the 2023/24 season, the team finished fifth last season thanks to their coach Peter Zeidler.

Various interesting players play for Lausanne, including Karim Sow. The Swiss footballer grew through the ranks of BSC Young Boys, then joining Stade Nyonnais and subsequently Lausanne. The 22-year-old is a right-back with great physical attributes and has also played for his U19 and U20 national teams.

Thursday’s match will be the first competitive game between Lausanne and Fiorentina, but the latter have already played against Swiss teams before. Out of their 14 matches against Swiss teams, they have collected eight wins, three draws and four losses.

There is an extraordinary common thread connecting the two teams: Giancarlo Antognoni. After 15 years spent playing for Fiorentina, making 341 appearances, scoring 61 goals and becoming a club legend, Antognoni chose to finish his career in Switzerland, at Lausanne. He played there for two seasons, collecting 51 appearances and seven goals. At the end of the 1989 season, the legendary playmaker hung up his boots and retired from football.
