Presentation of coach Paolo Vanoli and sporting director Roberto Goretti

Read the comments from Fiorentina coach Paolo Vanoli and Sporting Director Roberto Goretti during their official presentation at the Viola Park Wind Tre Media Center.

Why did you accept this challenge?

VANOLI: “I have a very simple answer to your question. I know what the city of Florence represents. This club has grown a lot in recent years. It has an ambitious president. I feel motivated by these challenges. And most importantly, I am not afraid. I know that the path ahead is long and complicated, so as I told the players, we must remain sharp because recovering from this situation requires time, sacrifice and hard work. That is what makes my job so beautiful.”

You said that something is missing in midfield and much must be done in defense. Do you want to make some changes in the team in January during the transfer window?

“Let’s not think about the transfer window and let’s instead focus on the present, one match at a time. Otherwise, our words will be misinterpreted. I said that we need new fuel when talking about training because you have to make the most of the international break and train well. I wasn’t trying to compare my work with the work of someone else, someone who did great things here and who I greatly respect as a coach.

"If we truly care about this team, we must all work together to get out of this situation. We are all responsible. There’s no point in talking about the transfer window now. We’re at the bottom of the table. Let’s focus on working hard and preparing for our upcoming match, which I believe will be a tough one.”

GORETTI: “The word ‘chaos’ was used earlier, but I disagree with the use of that term. I believe that the club has been very consistent in its decisions as well as responsive. Of course, facts are also accompanied by news that may be both accurate and inaccurate. But if you look at what has happened chronologically from Daniele [Prade]’s resignation, the match against Lecce, this whole week has been full of events and subsequent official statements.

“I want to stress that coach [Stefano] Pioli’s resignation was a difficult decision. It meant admitting that we had all made mistakes, not just him. He was dismissed without a severance package. All he said was that he believed he could go on and overcome this hard period. It was a hard decision for us, as there was a close relationship between us. Daniele Prade had resigned just days before him, whom I want to thank because he introduced me to the club last year. We went through a lot together and constantly exchanged ideas. So I must thank him for everything.

“Pioli’s dismissal was a tough decision for us, but we wanted a fresh start. We took stock of our work so far this season and the result was apparent: we just needed to look at the table. The players must understand that the recovery process will take time. We must be ready for every match, including our midweek European fixtures.”
