Grosso's thoughts after Roma defeat

Coach Fabio Grosso shared his opinions on his side’s defeat to Roma:

“We were up against a very good, well-established team. They had an outstanding season last time out and have carried on from where they left off. I expected there to be a lot of difficulties for us to deal with. We held our own in the first half, until we conceded halfway through. After the break, just when we were beginning to come into the game, we let in another goal, and after that we more or less lost our grip on the match.

“There are many things we could have done better, even in the first half, because we were a lacking in courage when it came to attacking.

“Obviously, we're disappointed with the result. We wanted to perform better than we did, but as we've said, we were up against a very strong opponent who caused us problems.

“We'll take a lot of lessons from this match because there are many things to learn. We'll try to work on them and continue building the team and improving, because there’s certainly a lot of work for us to be cracking on with.

“The main thing I take away from tonight is that you can’t let up at all during the full 90 minutes. Even when there’s no longer much hope of getting back into the game, you can still hold your own better than we did. For example, there’s a big difference between Roma scoring and not scoring the fourth goal.

“We need to develop as a team and understand that, in order to compete in this league, the qualities we have aren't enough on their own. We need a great mentality, great intensity and great courage.

“The goals today came from moments of slackness and lack of concentration. If we go back and look at the footage, this should be more than evident to us.

“Obviously, having potential isn't enough. We need to build ourselves as a team and develop a shared mentality and a shared identity. Those things allow you to go into these matches and play well-rounded games. We'll work on this and try to put together what we have in mind.”
