Genoa 2-2 Fiorentina: Gudmundsson and Piccoli score, but it’s not enough!

Matchday 11 of the 2025/26 Serie A season: Fiorentina faced Genoa at the Stadio Marassi. It was Paolo Vanoli’s first match as Fiorentina’s new coach: he opted to start the two former Genoa players Roberto Piccoli and Albert Gudmundsson up front. Simon Sohm also featured after his Conference League goal. He also went with a back three that included Marin Pongracic, Pablo Mari and Luca Ranieri.

It was also Daniele De Rossi’s first match as Genoa coach (though he was serving a suspension). He chose Vitinha and Lorenzo Colombo as forwards. Morten Frendrup was entrusted with the midfield and the three-man defense included Alessandro Marcandalli, Leo Skiri Ostigard and Johan Vasquez.

The opening goal came at minute 15: Aaron Martin delivered a great free kick from just outside the box and Ostigard headed it in, making it 1-0. Genoa seemed to be in control of the match, but Fiorentina’s response came immediately.

At minute 20, Fiorentina equalized thanks to Gudmundsson, who took the penalty and scored against his former club, making it 1-1. The first half of the game came to a close, after two minutes of added time, with the two teams tied 1-1. Ostigard’s header was followed by Gudmundsson’s penalty.

The second half had an uphill start for Fiorentina, but David De Gea managed to save Colombo’s penalty at minute 50. Minute 58 marked a turning point in the match: Gudmundsson won a rebound, passed the ball to Sohm at the edge of the box, who slid the ball through to Piccoli for a side-foot finish, making it 1-2. At minute 60 Colombo equalized for Genoa after a scramble in the box.

The hosts and the visitors both tried to score a respective third goal, first with an effort by Piccoli and then a turn and shot by Patrizio Masini, but the two goalkeepers did a good job and saved the shots, with the game ending 2-2. Fiorentina’s next match will be at home against Juventus, a historic and highly charged match in Florence.
