Coach Daniele Galloppa’s post-match comments following Mainz v Fiorentina

Read Coach Daniele Galloppa’s comments following the UEFA Conference League between Mainz and Fiorentina.

The positive energy you brought to the team wasn’t enough, but Fiorentina had a good start.

“Had we not conceded a last-minute goal and it had ended in a tie, the atmosphere would be different. We’re sorry about the result, but it always comes down to key moments. The team tried to create something. Expecting much more from them now wasn’t easy. It you create four or five major chances, you have to seize the opportunity and score. Because otherwise some moments can also turn against you. It hurts to concede a goal like that. We should’ve been more careful in the final minutes.”

Fiorentina even had the chance to double its lead. Mainz did a good job of staying in the game and making a comeback.

“We had our good moments and they had theirs throughout the match. However, we had several major chances. I think we conceded a lot: that’s how they stayed in the game. We’re all disappointed about the result. The players are disappointed because this game was crucial for their morale and for the phase we’re going through. But we’re ready to move on and focus on what’s next.”

They looked angry at themselves at the end of the match.

“Our job is to support our players. It’s a tough period. We’re all aware of this. We must support them because I see that they want to go on fighting. I see sadness in their eyes, the sadness you feel when you lose. They’re fully invested and it’s tough for them. We must support them because they have all the assets they need to bounce back.”
