Sporting Director Goretti’s post-match comments

Read Sporting Director Roberto Goretti’s comments following Fiorentina’s 3-1 defeat to Sassuolo.

What went wrong today? Is it a matter of mentality?

“We got off to a good start in the first few minutes, and we even took the lead. But a match is 100 minutes long. For the rest of the game, we were unable to play as a team. We had seen some improvements in the past few games. Today we did a lot worse. After our match against Atalanta we sent a message to our fans, who responded very clearly. We asked them to come, but we failed to deliver. We acknowledge the current situation. I believe everyone must contribute to finding a solution to the current crisis.”

It feels as though the team has accepted that it will be relegated on matchday 14. The team showed passive attitude, lack of ideas. Nothing worked, not even the throw-ins. Is it a matter of fear, a matter of personality?

“There were some improvements in the past few games. Not today. Every ball that reached the box became extremely dangerous. Many elements show that there’s not enough chemistry or trust among the players. That must be found if we are to fight back in this tough situation. We cannot give up and be relegated."

Today Fiorentina were a mess. Does the club believe that it has the situation under control? Do you plan on taking action? Paolo Vanoli is doing even worse than his predecessor. Are you going to keep him? Are you going to look for a new director to join you?

“We must think long and hard about what you said. Criticism must be considered by those in charge Sometimes drastic decisions are needed. You have to understand the situation, be realistic and take action. Something must be done to change things.”

Are you going to keep Vanoli as coach?

“Absolutely.”
