Mateo Pellegrino held a press conference after Fiorentina’s match against Torino.
What’s the atmosphere within the squad?
“There’s a lot of bitterness because we had a very good spell in the second half and we could’ve made it 2-0. But then it didn’t go our way. The fact that many of us are young is no excuse. We have to become grow up quickly because we want to turn things around. We want to improve and learn from our mistakes. It’s all about hard work.”
Why does the team struggle so much if it has such good individual players?
“This is why it’s the most beautiful sport in the world: sometimes things happen that just can’t be explained. I also believe we’re a very good team, but we have to show it on the pitch. So we have to learn from our mistakes and grow as a team.”
Being young can also be an asset.
“I agree. Young players have a lot of enthusiasm and energy. However, you can also lose control of the game as we did today. I believe that that happened because we lack experience. We were one goal in the lead and could’ve sealed the win and played a bit more intelligently to keep a clean sheet.”
Has your coach said anything after the game? What’s your relationship with him?
“It’s an excellent relationship. We believe in him. He did speak to us, but I won’t share what he said. All we have to do is work hard, that’s it.”
Do you have a message for the Fiorentina fans? And do you want to dedicate your goal to anyone?
“I want to thank them for their support and I completely understand their frustration because there are high expectations at Fiorentina. So we all need to perform better.
“I want to dedicate today’s goal to my family, to everyone who has supported me throughout this long journey. And I hope that many more will come.”
