Women beat Cesena 6-0

Fiorentina Women comfortably won their second friendly of August against Cesena. The match at Martorano ended 6-0 to the Viola, with both Siria Mailia and Alba Cerrato claiming braces. Caterina Andreoni and Giulia Baccaro also chipped in with a goal apiece.

Cesena, a Serie B side, took the field full of energy, eager to impress against their Serie A opponents, La Viola. They created the first real chance of the match when Karen Appiah used her pace to get away from Carolina Correia, forcing Viola Bartalini into an impressive stop. However, Fiorentina broke the deadlock after 19 minutes through Mailia, who deceived Giulia Mazzocchi in the Cesena goal and fired home.

The game remained balanced until the second half when coach Pablo Pinones Arce made wholesale changes to his side. New signing Alba Cerrato scored a magnificent goal with a flying backheel from a Oda Johansen assist, before Andreoni, Cerrato, Baccaro and Maila rounded off the scoring.

It was an excellent test for the Gigliate ahead of Saturday's blockbuster match. Manchester City, the reigning champions of the Women’s Super League, will visit the Rocco B. Commisso Viola Park for a friendly, kicking off at 20:00 CEST

Here's some of what our boss had to say about his side's 6-0 friendly triumph:

“I think we made our lives hard for ourselves in the first half. I think we need to be more patience and move the ball around with more pace and determination. We defended well, and while that was the case today we can’t give opponents as many chances. We made too many unforced errors. Overall I’m happy – we always try to what we do in training. We’re doing well and improving. It was great to see the youngsters doing well and scoring. 

“I think to really kick on we need to play against top-level teams. It’ll be great to see Manchester City here."

“I’m really happy, for myself but especially for the team. We played really well despite the heat, and we hope to carry on this way.

“[The Manchester City game] is sure to be really tough, but we’ll do what we can and be prepared as always.
