Comeback falls short: Fiorentina Women lose semi-final to Juventus

Fiorentina Women came close to reaching the Coppa Italia Women final, but in the end the match in Biella ended in a 1-2 loss to Juventus. The Bianconere will therefore advance to the final after winning against Fiorentina.

The Viola were left with the disappointment of knowing that they had the tools to beat the current Italian champions.
The game went as was expected, with Fiorentina pressing high and Juventus sitting deep, waiting for the right moment to hit their opponents on the counter. The deadlock was broken early on in the eighth minute, as Ana Capeta scored the opener for Juventus on their very first shot on target. Before and after the goal, Fiorentina dominated the entire first half, but still failed to score, with the score remaining 1-0 for the hosts.

The visitors, in fact, had five major chances, while Juventus had two, which were miraculously saved by Cecilie Fiskerstrand, plus a strike by Amalie Vangsgaard that rattled the crossbar.

In the second half, Juventus’ ruthlessness paid off once again, although Fiorentina were also a bit unlucky. Capeta scored with a header from a corner kick, beating both Michela Catena and Fiskerstrand, and making it 2-0. Fiorentina’s reaction came immediately with Katla Tryggvadottir and Iris Omarsdottir, who had just come on: the Icelander took a powerful shot and struck the post, but then Omarsdottir poked home the rebound. However, Juventus were able to block all subsequent attempts by Fiorentina, keeping the score unchanged.

With fifteen minutes remaining, coach Pablo Pinones Arce subbed in Martina Toniolo, who had just recovered from a long injury and made her season debut in her hometown, but that wasn’t enough either.

In the end, Juventus secured the win and advanced to the final. Despite the disappointment, Fiorentina are aware that they matched their opponents and can now focus all their energy on the league.

The Serie A Women season resumes next Saturday and Fiorentina will be facing Juventus once again, this time at the Stadio Curva Fiesole of the Rocco B. Commisso Viola Park. Kick-off at 12:30 CEST.
