How would you assess Fiorentina’s last few games?

“We must look at the table and how we’re performing on the pitch. That’s what I told our players. First of all, I want to thank the fans. We could really feel their passion today in the stadium. The most important thing that’s happened since my arrival is that all players help one another and realize that giving it their all also means giving something back to these fans, who truly deserve it.

“We mustn’t ask ourselves whether we’ve gained a point or lost two. We’ve played against a good team today. A team that over the past two years has won a league title, has finished second and is competing in the Champions League. But we gave it everything.

“Of course, we made some mistakes and we’ll have to work on that. But the players had the right attitude today. I want to congratulate them because what struck me the most in the last two league games was how the players reacted after conceding a goal.

“We hit the crossbar twice, had a chance from a corner kick and then conceded a goal. But then we fought back and equalized. I think the two keepers were the standout players on the pitch today.”

Where do you think Fiorentina fell short today? And what will you focus on during the international break?

“It’s nice to have many players who play for their national teams. On the other hand, it’s also a problem for us because otherwise, we could work more in this three-week period. We’ll work with the players who are going to stay and help some of them recover physically because some of them have some catching up to do. They have the right attitude, but the tempo is not what we’re looking for.

“Those who have been called up by their national teams will hopefully play and I hope that everything will go well. I think that what [Massimiliano] Allegri said about his team also applies to us. We had many chances to take the lead. Perhaps the goal we scored was in the least apparent chance we had throughout the game.

“However, we knew we were up against a good team. In fact, we suffered in the first half, but then we did better in the second. Víctor [Valdepenas] came on in the second half and did very well. If that’s the spirit of those who come on during the game, we can do great things.”
