Here’s what the Viola defender had to say after Fiorentina’s 1-1 draw with Napoli.

The fans showed you a lot of affection. Also, how happy are you that you got called up by your national team?

“I’m certainly very happy with the team’s performance. It was an intense match. We showed great quality, both in terms of technique and running. We really ran a lot. We did what we needed to do in defense to prevent Napoli’s great players from scoring. We’ve also shown continuity in our performances. That’s exactly what we need: continuity, positive energy and excitement.

“Playing for your national team is the greatest thing a player can dream of. I can’t wait to see my team-mates.”

Your performance today was amazing, but your previous ones this season were not as good? Why was that?

“I don’t think it’s something that concerns me alone. The coach brought a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm. But he always wants us to show intensity on the pitch, run as much as we can and help our team-mates. That’s what allows us to put up these performances. It’s about making sacrifices to help the rest of the team.

“I think it’s normal for me to perform better now because when you are starting out, you sometimes have trouble understanding what works and what doesn’t. I didn’t have a lot of continuity at Tottenham. I came here because I wanted to help the team. Ultimately, I believe that what truly matters is the present and that now we’re on the right path. We have to continue growing and get to know each other more because many in the squad are new. So we need to do that to know what qualities each of us has to offer.”

Do you think you can still improve?

“I do. I will never be satisfied with what I do because otherwise I’d stop growing. I did well today, but we’re still going to review the game and see what I could’ve done better and how I could’ve helped the team more.”
