Read the coach’s comments following Fiorentina’s draw against Milan on Sunday.
Why were you sent off? Does the team look consistent to you?
“I don’t think I deserved that red card, but I accept it. Since last year, engaging with the fourth official and the referee has become a bit difficult.
“Consistency is key. We’re learning to respond well when things get hard, to always react. This led to a good performance. In Rome, I didn’t like the first half from a technical point of view, but the players responded well when things got hard. They deserved a better result tonight. I told them that by playing the way they are it will come. This must be our standard from now on and we must always meet it. We were up against a very good team that hasn’t lost since August. We deserved to win and it was a solid performance on our part.”
How important was Pietro Comuzzo’s goal to you?
“It was very important because he is an extremely valuable player. So I’m very happy. There’s a lot of room for improvement, especially in possession. But it’s a pleasure to watch him train and I believe he has great prospects.”
Fiorentina tend to dominate the game, which does not explain why they are so low in the table. Can you explain this?
“It means we’re not playing that well. We need to stop thinking about the past and focus on the present. Since I joined the club, we’ve fixed many things. We’re still fixing others. When I arrived, I had to tell the players that they had a new goal, which was avoiding relegation. We must never forget that. That means that we must be ambitious, as we were tonight, and try to score, but if we had conceded following a counter-attack, I would’ve been furious. Because we must remain sharp and be consistent. It’s not always about winning: it’s about being consistent. Believing that we must win at all costs can turn into a burden. And being consistent means playing as we did tonight.”
