Carillo analyses Padova win

28 October 2020

Giuseppe Carillo picked over the bones of Fiorentina's 2-1 Coppa Italia win against Padova after Lorenzo Venuti's and Jose Callejon's first goals for the club set up a fourth-round clash with Udinese.

Carillo replaced the suspended Beppe Iachini in the dugout for Wednesday's match at the Stadio Franchi.

“It was important to win today to reach the next round but we came under too much pressure after taking the lead,” Carillo admitted.

Here's a selection of quotes from the assistant coach's post-match press conference:

ON VENUTI'S AND CALLEJON'S GOALS

“We're always happy when a player scores because it's good for him and for team morale in general.”

ON THE DEBUTANTS

“We had several players playing their first game of the season today and we knew we would suffer a dip in the second half. That happened but there some excellent performances nonetheless, especially by our new signings.

ON LETTING UP AFTER TAKING THE LEAD

“Perhaps we do need to address our mentality because we keep going ahead in games and then finding ourselves coming under pressure. Perhaps it can be explained by the difficult period we're going through generally, the way we finished last season, a summer with no real pre-season and the empty stadiums, but it's certainly something we need to work on and fix.”

ON PEZZELLA'S INJURY

“You never like to be without an important player such as him but we have a strong squad with other players who can replace him. Hopefully we'll have him back as soon as possible.”

ON ROMA

“We'll try to improve the things that aren't working this week. Roma is the sort of match that prepares itself. We want to go there, play well and come away with a result.”
