Fiorentina unlucky to lose at clinical Samp

05 March 2022

Fiorentina were beaten 2-0 away at Sampdoria in the Serie A Women matchday 16 contest on Saturday, as two quickfire goals towards the end of the first period gave the home side an advantage that proved unassailable.

Patrizia Panico’s side can consider themselves highly unfortunate to take nothing from their trip to Liguria. The opening goal came very much against the run of play and thanks to a huge slice of luck, as Florin Wagner saw a speculative effort from the corner of the box loop over Sabrina Tasselli and into the net with 35 minutes played.

The second goal arrived just moments later, as our former player Melania Martinovic caught a dipping ball perfectly from a tight angle to send a diagonal shot into the goal.

Fiorentina dominated the second period but were unable to find a breakthrough against a stubborn Doria defence. Valentina Giacinti and Karin Lundin both hit the woodwork amid the onslaught.

After a two-week break, the Viola’s next contest will be at home against Hellas Verona.
