Women beaten at home by Napoli

06 February 2022

Fiorentina Women suffered a frustrating afternoon against Napoli as their pressure failed to reap rewards while the visitors took maximum advantage from their only two chances.

The Viola started with purpose but found Napoli goalkeeper Baldi in fine form as she kept out first-half efforts from Mascarello, Boquete and Giacinti.

Straight after the restart, Sara Tui gave Napoli the lead when her cross-shot from an impossible angle somehow found its way into the net.

Mascarello almost levelled the scores with a free kick then Huchet headed over, but just as an equaliser looked imminent, Napoli went and doubled their lead when Jaimes turned in Severini's free kick from deep.

The Viola's late siege on the Napoli goal was to no avail as it ended 0-2.

Patrizia Panico's girls' next game will be on Saturday when they host Empoli at the Stadio Franchi for the second leg of their Coppa Italia quarter-final tie against Empoli (first leg 0-0).

PATRIZIA PANICO

“We carved out loads of openings and were hardly ever troubled at the back. We moved the ball around quickly and spent most of the 90 minutes camped in their half. Ultimately, we squandered too many chances.

“We'll watch the game again to look at our mistakes and the difficulties we had, and try to improve mentally and tactically as a team.

“Empoli is going to be a tough match, as they all are. We must show the determination we need to reach the next round, even if that means playing slightly less attractive football but being more pragmatic and clinical.”

ALICE TORTELLI

“We're gutted because I thought we were really solid and created lots of chances  today and yet we leave empty-handed. We're really disappointed.”
