Fiorentina Women edged out by Sassuolo on opening day

Patrizia Panico's side were beaten 2-1 as the 2021/22 Serie A Femminile season began

30 August 2021

Fiorentina Women were unfortunate to be beaten 2-1 by Sassuolo on the opening day of the 2021/22 Serie A Femminile season on Sunday evening.

There were chances for both sides in the opening half hour, but it was Sassuolo that took the lead on 35 minutes after Darya Kravets inadvertently turned the ball into her own net when trying to cut out a cross from the left.

Fiorentina hauled themselves level shortly after half time, with Karin Lundin heading home after the Sassuolo goalkeeper had failed to hold onto a cross.

But Patrizia Panico’s side found themselves trailing once again barely a minute after their equaliser, when Lana Clelland – the former Viola striker – received the ball on the edge of the Fiorentina box before rifling home off the post for 2-1.

Fiorentina streamed forward in search of another equaliser, but their efforts were thwarted time and again as Sassuolo hung on for the three points.
