We were expecting a great match and that’s exactly what we got: Fiorentina Women beat Roma 5-2 after playing a nearly perfect game. Iris Omarsdottir scored the opener, followed by a brace from Sofie Bredgaard: Roma then fought back, but at minute 95 Emilie Woldvik secured the win, with three more points for Fiorentina.
The hosts started off with great intensity and Omarsdottir immediately scored the opening goal: a precise left-footed shot on a surgical assist by Bredgaard.
The match immediately changed when Winonah Heatley was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, which forced Roma to change their defensive set-up. At minute 29, Kathrine Kuhl was substituted for Lucia Di Guglielmo, a good choice to restore tactical balance in the match. Despite that, Fiorentina kept pushing and came close to doubling their lead, first with a shot by Emma Severini, which was miraculously saved by Olivie Lukasova, and then another by Bredgaard that hit the crossbar.
In the second half, Fiorentina showed the same determination as the first half and quickly secured the win. Bredgaard played a key role, scoring two goals in just a few minutes: first with a soft chip that lifted the ball over the Roma goalkeeper, and then by capitalizing on a mistake by Lukasova, bringing the score to 3-0. Roma did not give up and with some luck got back into the game with an own goal by Emma Lombardi, who inadvertently deflected a loose ball. Right after that, Fiorentina regained the previous margin with another own goal, this time by Valentina Bergamaschi, who deflected a shot by Bredgaard into her own goal. The game kept feeling like a rollercoaster, with Manuela Giugliano scoring a penalty and keeping Roma in the game at 4-2. Fiorentina then sealed the win with Woldvik, who scored her first goal in Serie A at minute 95.
Fiorentina dominated and won handsomely against the league leaders. They are now just two points behind Roma. Coach Pablo Pinones Arce’s team played an excellent game and will now start preparing for their upcoming match in Parma next Saturday at 15:00 CET, aiming to continue this positive spell.
