Fiorentina Women began the new Serie A season with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Napoli.

Pablo Pinones Arce was forced to alter the team due to injuries (Maria Luisa Filangeri and Filippa Curmark the latest) and last-minute niggles (Agnese Bonfantini, Michela Catena, Lina Hurtig). He opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Emma Severini and Maya Cherubini in the middle of the park – Cherubini making her Serie A debut.

Fiorentina started the game on top and enjoyed more possession as the game went on, but the best chance of the half fell to Napoli's Alessia Carcassi.

The deadlock wasn't broken until 15 minutes from time. Melissa Bellucci won the ball in attack and had just the keeper to beat, but Cecilie Fiskerstrand saved incredibly, only for the ball to fall to Cecilie Floe for an easy finish.

Fiorentina claimed offside but the referee – with the aid of the new Football Video Support – disagreed.

The Viola spent the rest of the game on the attack in search of an equalizer which never came.

Fiorentina thus begin the season with a defeat and will now look to get their first points next Saturday when Inter visit the Stadio Curva Fiesole (17:30 CEST).
